Which Book First?

The best Discworld starting point depends on what kind of story you want. This guide helps you find it without any spoilers.

Atmospheric fantasy cityscape evoking the world of Discworld
The short answer

Most readers should start with Guards! Guards!

It is the first book in the City Watch sub-series and one of the most consistent beginner recommendations. A clear cast, a satisfying self-contained story, and an easy next step if you want to keep reading.

But the best starting point is not the same for everyone. Pratchett wrote Discworld across multiple sub-series with very different tones. The right first book is the one that matches what you are looking for right now.

Should you start with The Colour of Magic?

Only if you specifically want publication order. The Colour of Magic is the first Discworld book published, but many longtime fans and most beginner guides recommend starting elsewhere.

The early Discworld books have a different tone than later ones, and several readers have bounced off the series by starting at book one. If you try The Colour of Magic and it does not click, that is not a sign Discworld is not for you. Try Guards! Guards! or Mort instead.

Do you need to read Discworld in order?

No. Most Discworld books can be read as standalones, and the sub-series have clear internal orders but do not depend on each other. You can start with any recommended entry point and continue within that sub-series, or switch between sub-series whenever you want.

The only books with a close pairing are The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, which are best read together if you go the publication-order route.

FAQ

What is the best Discworld book to start with?

For most readers, Guards! Guards! is the safest recommendation. If you want something shorter and more thoughtful, try Mort. If you want folklore and witches, try Wyrd Sisters. All three are reliable starting points.

Can I start with any Discworld book?

Technically yes. Most Discworld books are accessible without prior reading. But starting with a recommended entry point gives you a much smoother experience than starting at random.

Is Discworld hard to get into?

It depends on where you start. The early books can feel different from the rest of the series. Starting with a later, character-driven entry point like Guards! Guards! or Mort tends to click faster for new readers.

Is this page spoiler-free?
