Can I Skip New Spring?

A spoiler-free answer on whether the New Spring prequel novella is required reading, and the best time to slot it in if you do want to read it.

The short answer

Yes, you can safely skip New Spring on a first read.

It is a prequel novella, not part of the main 14-book series. The main series stands completely on its own without it.

If you do want to read it, the best timing is after book 11 (Knife of Dreams) or at the very end of the series.

What New Spring actually is

  • A standalone prequel novella set before the events of The Eye of the World.
  • Originally published as a short story, then expanded into a full novella and published between books 10 and 11.
  • It covers backstory for characters you will meet in the main series.
  • It has no bearing on the main plot - you will not be lost without it.

Think of it as optional enrichment, not required reading.

Best timing if you want to read it

Recommended timing

After Knife of Dreams (book 11). By then you have enough context for it to be most rewarding.

Also works

After finishing the full series. A good way to revisit early character history once you know how everything turns out.

If you want to skip it

Skipping entirely is the most common choice. The main series is complete without it.
